Pm-503 The Ethic of Love (Three Semester
Lecturer: Dr. Edison Wiltshire
Director of International Affairs
The Jews were great at defining life. There was a rule for everything.
The 10 commandments established God’s standard
for life and living. It acted as a mirror to expose how sinful and
unloving human beings really are.
The Old Testament Church, especially through the
Pharisees, became so legalistic in its approach to ritualistic law
that Jesus described the enhanced system of do’s and don’ts as a
millstone around everybody’s neck.
When ask what was the greatest of the commandments,
Jesus offered in answer the essence of divinity – Love. Love God
and Love man. He came to establish God’s love in a way it had never
before been understood and represented, as the age of grace was
Loving God with all one’s being looks after the
spirit of the first 4 of the 10 commandments. Loving neighbour looks
after the next 5. And loving one’s self looks after the last. How
simple this is!
Jesus takes away the burden of do’s and don’ts
such as those imposed by the Jewish Religion of His own day and
to a large extent, those of legalistic and negative Christianity
in our day.
This Course will expose the Ethic of Love for others
and for self that Jesus was talking about. It explores the detailed
articulation of that Ethic by the Apostle Paul, and promotes the
kind of love for God required by Christians to enable the action
of this Ethic.
The 12 exhortations of Saint Paul to commitment
for the practicality of love to one another in the Christian Church
and beyond will be explored.
